There is a heat wave going on in the United States right now, as many of you have noticed. Droughts seem to be affecting darn near everywhere. In the Pacific Northwest, we have done pretty well so far. In fact, many of us were afraid that we weren’t going to get much of a summer. The weather had been notoriously low, gloomy and rainy, even for a Washington summer.
However, it seems the weather has surprised us once again as it tends to do in Washington. We have a quote here, “don’t like the weather? Wait 5 minutes.” Well, we have been hit with a hot spell. It has been a glorious 80+ degrees here for a number of days in a row. August 5th is my birthday, and for the most part it rains on my birthday annually. Needless to say I was pleased that I had 90 degree weather (33 Celsius for you non-US residents).
I spent my birthday hanging around the house … sweating. In an effort to beat the heat I asked Eowyn if I could make a smoothie using some of the freezer fruit. She agreed. I then advised her that she would likely need to supervise me in the kitchen, as I had no idea how she makes a smoothie. She then proceeded to kind of snort laugh and sent me to get the fruit and ultimately ended up making the smoothie for me (I love her).
Side note: Have I ever mentioned that I am completely useless when it comes to kitchen appliances? I am. The most high tech gadget I ever had in my kitchen was a toaster, unless you count the microwave I never used cause it freaked me out. Plus roommates and microwaves are a horrid combination. You always get the roommate that microwaves chili or something with tomato sauce. Then they won’t fess up that they were the reason that the inside of the microwave looks like Hannibal had a go at it.
Needless to say, I’m pretty happy I have no room for appliances in my little house, it would end in injury I’m sure of it. Eowyn has a lot of the fancy ones, as she is a fantastic cook. She has a Cuisinart, a fancy blender, this thing that you can shove in a cup and blends things, a KitchenAid Mixer
, and a bunch of other things I can never identify. If you hand me a belt sander, angle grinder (thanks Stone), table saw, a drill or a sawzall and I’m good. Put me in a kitchen and I stare blankly. I also get a bit wiggy about dishwashers and vacuums, the new ones look like an alien constructed them and the buttons never do what I think they are going to do.
Where was I? Oh right, hot spell. So, due to the heat it has been near impossible to work with my dreads as the process involves heat sealing them. I’m already sweating more than I am comfortable admitting, and I have no desire to compound the problem. So I have been waiting until after dark to start working. This has been allowing me a little involuntary downtime during the day. I would spend the time blogging, but my computer has been overheating a bit too. It’s pretty ridiculous.
Trying to find ways to spend the day, waiting for the evening to arrive so I can work, I have been spending a little bit of time in the mini pool in the backyard and sunbathing. Trying in vain to get my tan going for Burning Man, in the hopes I might sunburn less while out and about on the playa. However, my very pale legs do not seem to be getting the hint. Yesterday, I spent the day productively making hair flowers for Autumn War, which look kick ass by the way. I will throw some up in my Etsy Shop eventually.
For dinner Eowyn and I agreed that spring rolls sounded like a good idea. We found a few recipes online that we liked and combined them to make a fantastic summer meal (with a lot of ingredients from the garden). I was hoping to make these food pictures look Pinterest worthy. I have determined that Pinterest is a land of foodies, everything on there is designed to make me hungry or fat… or a delicious combination of both.
How do you guys combat the heat in the summer? Do you have any foods or beverages that you like to prepare? Special recipes? A magic sweet tea recipe that lowers your body temperature so that you no longer sweat or feel heat? Share in the comments.

Cold sandwiches and salads are awesome! I hear gazpacho soup is good, though I have never tried it myself. You could probably make excellent gazpacho with the fresh veggies you have access to.
I was wondering if you had considered making falls for BJDs. A friend was telling me about her Blythe doll and it gave me the idea…
Good luck staying cool!
You know, I should try a gazpacho. That would be delicious. I’m very much a fan of cold sandwiches and salads. A cold soup would be a good addition.
You know, I had to Google what a BJD was (Ball Jointed Doll, for those of you tuning in). I never considered it. But, I could easily do so. Hmm.
Odd, I thought I had seen you mention ball joint dolls in another post…must have been another blog. I am enjoying the heck out of your blog!
BJD enthusiasts spend CRAZY amounts of money customizing their dolls…look into it for sure!
I am glad you’re enjoying my blog! It’s always nice to get feedback. As a blogger you feel like you’re talking to yourself a lot. Which, I guess I am… But in a socially acceptable way.
Well, I have enough small bits kicking around my house that I could totally do it. Mental note when I have some down time. Thanks for the tip! That sounds kinda fun.
A friend suggested I should make some falls for horses too, as that is a pretty lucrative hobby. I haven’t figured out how I would do that one yet. But the thought entertained me. Clydesdales with dreads. Hehehehe. That would be rad.
I only wish we were in the 90 degree range…. we’re bouncing around 103 to 107 with a nice 85% humidity. It hasn’t rained here in over a month! We just keep the curtains drawn, the lights down low and the A/C down to 76…. it feels like heaven when you walk in! Kitchen gadgets are a lot like power tools, think mixer/that paint stirring thing on the end of a big drill, electric knife/jig saw, blender/cement mixer. I think you should post your pictures of clients with their dreads to Pinterest. The hubby posted his guitar strings and picks that he sells.
Oof. That sounds a bit on the horrendous side! I’m a Washingtonian, I was not built for hot weather nor humidity. No rain in a month!? Oy! That’s just…. horrid. At least you have AC. We do not have AC in most houses here. Thankfully, the pool is a nice reprieve if it gets too hot here.
I do post some pictures to Pinterest. I have been really bad about taking pictures of my orders as of late. You can find me on Pinterest as Dreadnaught Darling. I need to start taking pictures of custom orders that I am doing. Unfortunately, I never seem to get pictures of my clients wearing falls after they have been acquired. As a number of them are across the country. Appreciation photos are totally appreciated!
