Dee’s house in Olympia – November 2010. (Forgive the horrible picture, I was so excited to see her house and meet her that I could barely contain myself)

Hey Tiny House fans! There is an upcoming workshop hosted by Tumbleweed Tiny House Company and being led by Dee Williams of Portland Alternative Dwellings (P.A.D.).  You can find this fantastic workshop on September 8th and 9th, in Olympia, Washington. If you’re not in the Pacific Northwest, there are a number of other workshops being hosted. Check out the list here to see if there are any Tumbleweed workshops near you.

Dee is a fantastic lady and I credit her for inspiring me to continue looking into owning a tiny home. After talking with her, especially in light of the fact that she is a woman, I felt empowered. I was a bit downtrodden that she was unable to build my tiny house due to her busy schedule. However, once she directed me to Abel I had met the right guy for the job.

I know many of you have the time, resources or enthusiasm to strike out and build your own home. I think that is quite rad, and I want to encourage each and every one of you to consider building your own home. There are so many places you can have build your home, consult you on your build, or just buy plans from. Either way, I recommend doing your research and figuring out what type of home suits you best.

Tiny homes are great as a primary residence, I adore mine. However, in economic struggles, these houses are a great solution for a number of reasons.  Mark had a fantastic idea for building his tiny house. His mother had lost her home during Hurricane Katrina. In an effort to help, he had a tiny house built so that his mother could move out with him. This allowed her to be closer to him, while still maintaining her independence. You can find much pictures of his tiny house here.

A number of teenagers and college students are starting to become very interested in the Tiny House movement and this excites me. I cannot begin to tell you how I look back and think how much grief I could have saved myself had I realized I could thrive in a tiny home years ago. What is even more exciting is how many people are building these homes with no construction background.

If building your own tiny home is not an option, due to skill level, lack of time or you just do not want to have to do it yourself. There are so many builders out there that are specializing in building a tiny home that can assist you now.  I will always recommend Abel Zimmerman at Zyl Vardos first and foremost, because he did such a fantastic job with mine.

You can also check Tiny House Listings to see if any tiny homes are for sale near you. It is always fun to scan the listings (even for me) to see what awesome, and unusual homes people have for sale. Tiny House Listings also has a link for Tiny House Parking. You can locate some places you could park your newly acquired or built home.

Are you thinking about buying or building a tiny house?
